Carnival of Financial Goals – Music Edition!

Wednesday, February 4, 2009 0:01 - By The David

Welcome to the Carnival of Financial Goals.  I chose music for the theme because it’s a great source of motivation for me.  It helps me focus when there are distractions, and it drives me when I need a little more ”ummph” to accomplish a hard task.

There were more than 100 submissions this month, but unfornately, they couldn’t all make it.  It was hard, but I narrowed it down to a more readable number.

Withour further ado, here is the Carnival of Financial Goals – Music Edition.  I hope you enjoy these entries as much as I did.

  • Thanks, that was a very interesting read. The history behind the facts…
  • Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Can I ask what you mean about the history behind the facts?

Very disappointed on the degraded quality of the carnival. There are three posts which have been published in at least two other carnivals.

    as example: how to brighten...
    http://dividendtree.blogspot.com/2009/02/carniv...

Why are there so many post not related to financial goal settings? If you want to include any article, then make is a personal summary or weekly links, why put it under carnivals....

Is there a buddy system going on here ?
  • I'm sorry that you're so unhappy with the carnival.

    I'll respond to your grievances:

    - I had a little more than 48 hours to review more than 100 submissions. I tried my best to compile an entertaining, on topic carnival.
    - There is no buddy system, I can assure you. I had never seen most of these sites before, and I guarantee you that even fewer of them have ever heard of me.
    - I am sorry that submitters did not follow the rules, and submitted posts to multiple carnivals. I did reject the ones that I knew were duplicates (at least 5-10). However, I do not have the time to check every carnival from the past month to make sure that none of the articles were duplicated. That would mean I would have to check at least 28 different editions of carnivals, with anywhere from 25-50 posts each. There's just not enough time to do that, especially when I only had 48 hours to do this.
    - I included some articles that were not specifically about a goal, because they gave tips on how to achieve goals of mine (such as reducing debt or setting a budget). This seemed to fit under the carnival's rule that posts include "general tips on achieving or setting goals" (exact quote from the submission rules). Had I not included some general posts, there only would have been 10-15 posts, nearly all on New Year's resolutions. Again, this can also be blamed on the short amount of time I had.
    - I think it's rude to criticize me anonymously. It would be one thing if you were disagreeing with something I said, but you're just bashing me for doing something that arguably helps out other people more than myself.
    - If you're so disappointed with the quality of the carnival, I suggest that you host it. Don't just complain, do something about it.

I appreciate your feedback, though I wish it would have been more constructive, and not as accusatory.

    David,

My intent was not accusatory; when i posted the response my purpose of was questionnaire. It came out in a wrong way, so please accept my sincere apologies.

I am researcher and currently looking at "impact of such blog carnivals" on web traffic, e commerce, and pseudo methods of traffic generation. How to count multiple pseudo link generations as one. The end result of this is to feedback issues to be captured in web traffic analysis algorithms.

I do not maintain any blog and do not intend to in future. While the intent of blog carnivals is great, lately, it has lost the purpose.

I did not intend to undermine your efforts in hosting it. I just questioned the quality and purpose of the carnival. once again my apologizes for unintentionally offending you.
  • I believe I owe you an apology as well. I'll admit that my response was a bit of a knee jerk reaction.

After hearing you explain yourself, your comment makes much more sense.

Your research sounds very intriguing. I'd be interested to hear what conclusion you come up with, because regardless of it was intentional or not, I fell victim to some of the issues that come up in carnivals.

Thanks for your feedback and explanation...I really do appreciate it.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to how I could make future carnivals more useful for readers , submitters and myself. Next time I'll try to look around other carnivals more for duplicate stories.

    David:

I will surely commend your honesty and integrity for non-moderated flow of comments on your blog. I hope you do not remove this in future.

Majority of the bloggers just moderate such comments and do not let it post on their blogs. It demonstrates their ulterior motives behind it.
  • Thank you very much!

I plan on keeping it that way. The only filtering that takes place now is done automatically to prevent spam, but other than that, anything goes.

I welcome criticism and complaints. I'm doing this to learn and get better at it, so it's inevitable I'll make mistakes along the way. I'd like to know about it when I do.

Plus I want to encourage debate and conversation...not restrict it. And from a logicstical point of view, it makes things easier not to moderate, and it allows comments to go up immediately.

    Thanks for the compliment.
  • Hi, David,

Thanks for hosting and thank you for including my post.

    Best regards
  • Hi fathersez,

  • I'm glad you feel honored. I take that as a compliment as well :)

I liked that your post outlined different budgeting options, especially because Excel was the first one listed. I toy around with mint and Quicken sometimes, but Excel is still my go-to.
