Weekly Blog Roundup – February 22nd

Sunday, February 22, 2009 9:08 - By The David

Welcome to another edition of the roundup.  I hope you had a good Valentine’s Day.

Adam at Your Money Relationship asks, Are You ‘Living Within Your Means’ or ‘Below You Means’? It’s an interesting on take on what each means, and which he’d rather be.

Billshrink has a fun (and slightly sarcastic) article telling you to Stop Wasting Your Money on These 25 Things.

Mike at Oblivious Investor suggests that we Don’t Retire.  It takes a look at the idea that the nature of retirement could be changing, and it might not be for the worse.

The Happy Rock reminds us all that Living In Fear Is Not Productive! Younger people have felt less of an impact than others so far, but we have the most to lose by living in fear.  Don’t give in!

Patrice at Seek Wisdom, Find Wealth writes about how she Wants to Be a Nobody. It’s a good way to become and act wealthy.

Fined Tuned Finances shows how if you pay the minimum payments on credit cards, you could be paying them for 42 years.

And for the fun link, Fined Tuned Finances also found a hilarious video from Saturday Night Live about a new system for building wealth:

  • David, thanks for the link! I had to squint my eyes for a second because I thought I was misreading! Haha! I appreciate the love!
  • My pleasure. It was a great article.

I'll admit that it's been a while since I've been to church, but one of my favorite sermons that I remember from years ago was about how it's better to sit in the back and be invited to move forward, rather than to sit in the front and have to move back.

It's always struck a chord with me, and your post reminded me of that sermon. Nice writing.
  • I recognize that type of sermon. Funny you mention that because I almost wrote on that today, but went a different direction because of your inspiration no doubt!

Proverbs 25:6-7 says "Do not exalt yourself in the king's presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it isbetter for him to say to you, "Come up here," than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman"

    . . . . deep, huh? . . .

Anywho, I wrote about the lesson I got out of the movie Troy today. Very different for me, but I enjoyed it. I wanted to go an and on, but did what I could given the time. If you get a sec, check it out. I try not to be too preachy - just practical.
  • That proverb sounds like the source of the sermon I heard. It is deep, and I like it because you can apply it to so much in life, and even finance. With regards to money, I take it as meaning it's better to live within your means and build wealth, rather than to act wealthy but really be broke.

You should still write a post about it...it sounds like a great article.

I just read your Troy post, and liked it, especially how you framed it. Countless thousands of people died as war was waged over the course of years, all because someone had to have one thing that wasn't his.
  • Thanks for the Link love :-)
  • No problem. I really liked how you spelled out the details in the minimum payment example. Hearing "42 years" is a lot more powerful and effective than any percentage or other figure you could give someone.

Thanks for pointing out the SNL video too...I would've missed it if I hadn't seen it on your blog.
  • Thanks for the link and have a great week!
  • My pleasure. Thanks for the unique angle in your article.
